Library Materials Challenge Process

Submitting a Request

To initiate a reconsideration, an individual (district employee, parent or guardian of a student, or district resident) must complete the Library Materials Challenge Form and submit it to the Campus Principal

Distribution of Request

Upon submission, copies of the completed request shall be provided to:

  • The campus librarian
  • The Superintendent
  • The Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
  • The Board of Trustees

Formation of the Reconsideration Committee

Within 15 days of receiving the challenge form, the campus principal shall appoint a Reconsideration Committee. The committee shall include:

  • The campus principal (or designee)
  • The campus librarian
  • At least one classroom teacher familiar with the challenged material
  • Additional classroom teachers, parents, or community members as appropriate
  • District-level staff, library staff, or other individuals as needed

Committee members shall receive all relevant materials and information necessary for a thorough review.

Review Process and Timeline

  • The committee shall review the challenged material in its entirety.
  • Multiple copies of the material will be provided as needed to facilitate review.
  • Within 60 days of committee formation, the committee shall meet to discuss the material and complete the Committee Reconsideration of Library Materials report.

Treatment of Material During Review

The material under reconsideration shall be restricted from student access during the review process in accordance with the District’s uniform procedure approved by the Board for handling challenged materials.

Notification of Decision

  • The completed Committee Reconsideration of Library Materials report shall be submitted to the Superintendent, the individual who submitted the challenge, the school librarian, and the Board of Trustees.
  • The committee’s report shall include a recommendation regarding whether the material should remain in the library collection.
  • The Board’s decision shall be final and rendered in accordance with the timelines established in law, considering the factors outlined in Education Code §33.027(f).

Subsequent Requests

Once the Board has rendered a final decision, the same material may not be reconsidered for the same reason for a period of two years.
