Selection Procedures
Campus library materials are selected, evaluated, and acquired with consideration given to a variety of criteria, as appropriate to the specific needs and context of each resource:
     ● Curriculum Alignment: Materials support the TEKS and the District's curriculum when applicable.
     ● Student Needs: Consideration of students' age, maturity, reading levels, interests, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds.
     ● Educational Value: Support for the development of factual knowledge, critical thinking, literary, appreciation, and personal learning.
     ● Inclusion: Representation of varied cultures, viewpoints, and experiences, including those of underrepresented groups.
     ● Literary Quality: Artistic and technical merit in both content and presentation.
     ● Gaps and Coverage: Addressing gaps in subject matter, genre, series, or authors in the existing collection.


Recommended Review and Selection Sources
Professional library staff shall evaluate resources in consultation with:
     ● Reputable professional journals such as Booklist, School Library Journal, Horn Book, and Kirkus Reviews.
     ● Award lists and curated selections including ALSC Notable Children’s Books, YALSA Best Books for Young Adults, Follett, TLA Reading Lists, Junior Library Guild, and We Need Diverse Books.
     ● Expert recommendations from librarians, educators, and literacy professionals.

 

Additional Selection Considerations
At least two of the following methods should be employed during the selection process:
     ● Recommendations from students, parents/guardians, educators, and community members.
     ● Consultation with Diboll ISD educators and library staff and/or with staff from comparable school districts.
     ● An extensive review of the full content of the resource.
     ● Consideration of contextual appropriateness and how a resource fits within the existing collection.
     ● Alignment with curriculum and classroom instruction.


Materials that are pervasively vulgar, harmful to minors, or educationally unsuitable, as defined by the Texas Penal Code, shall not be acquired.
